Pelican Case Boombox – 2.1 w/ TPA3116

Ben, I know you’ll dig this!

This thing is pretty serious. You can tell the guy has some experience building these too. Unfortunately, it’s just the video. You get a good look at everything, but he doesn’t go into depth concerning the wiring.

  • He uses the 3.5″ Tang Band mini subwoofer driver, a 3.5″ passive radiator and some other drivers for kids and highs.
  • 8 Li-ion batteries in 4S configuration.
  • It doesn’t look like he has any additional charging circuitry in addition to the onboard protection of the batteries.
  • He’s using the Sure Bluetooth board, which I’m now noticing is shielded just like those on their newer combo boards. Maybe this is the secret to getting rid of that notorious Bluetooth noise that no-one seems to have written down a fix for.
  • Sure Combo board: BT and TPA3118 for 2X30 watts — I’m currently rebuilding my Sprite using this. It is awesome, but not fully documented or obvious yet, so I’m stuck trying to get the potentiometer and minor things working.
  • Sure Combo Board: BT and TPA3116 for 2×50 watts
  • The box looks small (~.15 cu.ft.), even with the passive radiator, but on PE, they recommend on .04 cu.ft. for sealed and .11 cu.ft. for vented, so…

Also interesting is that he uses a BBE XR1075 tone control, something I’ve not really thought about employing, opting for example instead to balance drivers with the crossover only and then using the knobs on the TPA3116 if I need more/less deep base like on my 2.1 Overnight Sensations set-up.

I don’t think I’d found builds on this site, Home DIY, before.

Update! He also hacks his Bluetooth units to have a longer antenna. I read about this a while ago but have never tried it. Looks easy.
